In June 2025, Stanley Roof and Solar replaced the roof on Roy’s large home in Little Elkhorn, Brush Prairie, WA. The 22-year-old CertainTeed Presidential designer roof had become brittle and was cracking and losing shingles in wind storms, and poor ventilation had led to mold in all three attic spaces. We fixed the ventilation with help from Malarkey’s technical team and installed Malarkey Windsor designer shingles in Midnight Black, finishing the project in about a week.

What was wrong

The designer shingles should have lasted longer than 22 years, but they were brittle, cracking and coming off in wind storms, which caused leaks around the home.

The builder had not installed the correct ventilation, and mold had grown in all three attic spaces. Stanley Roof and Solar completed the mold testing, remediation and sealing.

What we did

Removed the old CertainTeed shingles and replaced 35 sheets of damaged plywood.
Removed and blocked off the old, non-working vents.
With guidance from Malarkey’s technical team on site, installed new shingle-over intake vents at the eaves, supplemented by solar and hardwired attic fans.
Sealed the areas where birds and squirrels were getting into the home.
Installed Malarkey 1040 permeable underlayment so the roof system can breathe, plus Malarkey 401 Arctic Seal.
Installed Malarkey Windsor starter and SmartStart starter shingles, Malarkey Windsor shingles in Midnight Black and Lifetime pipe flashings.
