Finished Malarkey roof in Midnight Black over the low-slope section of a home in Minnehaha, Vancouver, WA

In August 2026, Stanley Roof and Solar replaced the roof and gutters on Shawn’s home in the Minnehaha neighborhood of Vancouver, WA, ahead of an El Niño winter. A low-slope section on the back of the home had shingles that were installed incorrectly, and Shawn also wanted a longer overhang at the front to keep water from running down the front of the home into the garage. We prepared the low-slope areas properly, built the new overhang, installed a complete Malarkey roofing system and finished with new seamless gutters.

Project at a glance

About the area

Minnehaha is a community in Clark County, Washington, bordered on the west, south and east by the city of Vancouver.

The challenge and how we solved it

The challenge: the low-slope section on the back of the home had shingles that were not installed properly. There were no ceiling stains yet, but it needed to be fixed before an El Niño winter. Water was also running down the front of the home and seeping into the garage, so Shawn wanted a 12-inch overhang added. Although the roof looked like it was in OK shape, some of the plywood underneath was wet and starting to rot.

The solution: the crew installed Malarkey 401 Arctic Seal on every low-slope section, our carpenters added recessed outriggers to carry the new 12-inch overhang, and the rotting plywood, mostly along the low-slope section, was replaced with new sheathing nailed to code. New seamless gutters finished the job.

What we did

  1. Removed all of the shingles and installed Malarkey 401 Arctic Seal on every low-slope section, since only certain shingles are rated for low slopes and the area has to be prepared correctly.
  2. Our carpenters removed the front sheathing and installed recessed outriggers to support the new 12-inch overhang.
  3. Replaced the sheets of plywood that were rotting, mostly along the low-slope section, and installed new sheathing with a 4-inch edge and 6-inch field nail pattern to code.
  4. Installed Malarkey 1031 Secure Start Plus underlayment with cap nails and Malarkey SmartStart starter shingles.
  5. Installed Malarkey Legacy shingles in Midnight Black and Malarkey EZ-Ridge algae-resistant hip and ridge caps, plus Lifetime Tool pipe flashings and a bath vent.
  6. Installed and painted new barge and gable trim, then installed new white 6-inch one-piece Stanley gutters.

The finished project

Although the roof looked like it was in OK shape, some of the plywood underneath was wet and starting to rot. Shawn received a Malarkey premium warranty, which backs up Stanley’s labor warranty for 25 years and includes a lifetime warranty on the shingles.

Why these materials

Malarkey Legacy shingles in Midnight Black. Legacy carries a Class 4 hail impact rating and uses Scotchgard Protector with at least 10% 3M copper granules for algae resistance, backed by a limited lifetime algae warranty against blue-green algae. Malarkey lists a 20-year non-prorated period, up to 130 mph enhanced wind warranty, and about 6 tires and 4,000 plastic bags kept out of the landfill per average roof.

Malarkey 401 Arctic Seal. A waterproof, self-adhering underlayment that Malarkey makes for the areas of a roof most likely to leak. Its self-sealing sheet protects against leaks around nails. On this home it covers every low-slope section, since only certain shingles are rated for low slopes and the area has to be prepared correctly.

Malarkey 1031 Secure Start Plus underlayment. A five-layer synthetic underlayment with an anti-skid surface that holds it in place. Malarkey says its polypropylene layer helps resist water penetration and that it is up to 3 times lighter than conventional felt paper.

Malarkey Smart Start starter shingles. Made with NEX rubberized asphalt, with rubberized adhesive bonds that Malarkey says give extra seal-down and wind protection at the eave and rake edges, where wind usually gets under a roof first.

Malarkey EZ-Ridge hip and ridge shingles. High-profile hip and ridge caps color matched to the field shingles. Malarkey rates them UL Class 4 for impact resistance and adds Scotchgard Protector for algae resistance.

Lifetime Tool pipe flashings and bath vent. Pipe penetrations are one of the most common leak points on a roof, so every plumbing vent got a new pipe flashing.

6-inch one-piece K-style gutters in white. Seamless gutters are formed on site from one continuous length cut to match the roofline, so the only joints left are at the corners and end caps, where most gutter leaks start.

Keeping your roof in good shape

  • Clear debris off the low-slope section after storms. Water drains more slowly there, so anything that holds water is a bigger risk.
  • Watch for moss. Damp, shaded roofs in the Pacific Northwest grow it fast, and moss holds water against the shingles. A roof maintenance visit can treat it before it lifts the shingle edges.
  • Clear fir needles and leaves out of the valleys and off the roof after fall windstorms, so rain can run off instead of pooling behind the debris.
  • Clean the gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and every 3 to 4 months under heavy tree cover. Clogged gutters overflow onto the fascia and siding.
  • Look the roof over from the ground after big wind or rain events. The National Weather Service Portland office issues wind and storm warnings for Clark County and the Portland metro, and missing or lifted shingles should be checked before the next storm.
  • Keep the attic vents clear. Insulation or stored items blocking the intake vents cuts off the airflow that keeps the attic dry.
